From the MapAction team… A MapAction team left the UK the day after the earthquake struck and is
working in Port-au-Prince to support relief coordination. Their maps have been crucial during the search and rescue phase on the ground. They are now creating a shared operational picture for relief deliveries. WFS and KML feeds have been created displaying Urban Search And Rescue (USAR) sectors for Port-au-Prince and 1:50 000 topographic maps for Haiti. These feeds will be updated as/when required. AND Automotive Navigation Data Makes Available Haiti GIS dataset and iPhone App
AND (AND Automotive Navigation Data) has recently released a Shape dataset of Haiti, available to users free of charge. The company informs us they will make this map available to everyone in order to geo-enable everybody in the aid efforts in the earthquake-devastated nation. The shape file will be
available via the AND website HERE.
Besides the shape file, the company has also included the map in our on-line editable map – See HERE.
finally, AND has also developed an iPhone app (available soon) – iMaps Haiti – iMaps Haiti for the iPhone was developed order to assist the workers on the ground. With iMaps Haiti users can:
– Find your location via GPS
– Plan your route

iMaps Haiti is free and will be available in iTunes soon
360 Degree Immersive Media videos around Port au Prince, Haiti
Remember Immersive Media?? These are the people that introduced the World (and Google) to 360 Immersive Media imagery (think Street View). Well, seems the team has been driving around Port au Prince, capturing 360 degree video of some of the areas devastated by the earthquake. The imagery is available for viewing at http://www.immersivemedia.com/haiti/ and also HERE on the CNN website.

ERDAS Providing Access to Geospatial Web Services for Haiti Relief
Representatives from ERDAS tell us that teh company has updated their Online Web Services to incorporate the GeoEye imagery collected January 13, 2010 (made available for free download). From ERDAS: We plan to also put this on our website later today (Jan 19). Note that any end user can directly consume these images from the online web services in ArcMap/ArcGIS Server, AutoCAD, MapInfo, web clients, open source thick clients, ERDAS IMAGINE and our hosted web services. Individuals may also consume the image in ECWP in ArcMap, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, many other thick client packages and web clients by downloading the ECW Plug-in freely available for download on the ERDAS web site at: http://www.erdas.com/tabid/84/currentid/2508/default.aspx See more details including links to WMS services HERE
Haiti GIS Datasets available via Harvard Earthquake Research Center
The Harvard Earthquake research center has set up a portal serving up free GIS data products covering Haiti. A number of data products and layers are available for download including:
- damage assessments
- admin boundaries
- streets
- major building footprints
- satellite imagery
- hydro features
- place names
- Quickbird imagery
- and more

Visualizing Haiti with the ESRI Viewer – Satellite Imagery, OSM data and more
Recall the other day (Wednesday) we shared details of the ESRI Flex Viewer as a great option for mapping Haiti along with related data feeds (like the USGS earthquake data to visualize the exact quake centroids). Well, it seems the ESRI team has been hard at it this week, updating web-mapping services as well as working on web services specifically for first responders (ie. no public access, sorry) along with the map viewer (built on ArcGIS Server) found at http://geoss.esri.com/geoviewer/
This fine service enables users to quickly and efficiently visualize the area of Haiti with a number of data sources including, OpenStreetMap data, the most recent GeoEye and DigitalGlobe imagery, and USGS datasets. There’s also links to the recordings from the USGS from the quake that hit on January 12.
ESRI has also developed an Earthquake Support Resource Center with useful links and pointers to data resources

The Haiti imagery layer from Google for Google Earth
Working closely with GeoEye, Google is making available the most recent satellite imagery from GeoEye in order to paint a clearer picture of the devastation. Users can download the KML here and open it in Google Earth, or look at it via the browser plug-in below. The layer will be automatically updated with the latest datasets as they are processed. FortiusOne Mapping Haiti Quake Effects and Relief Efforts
The cool team at FortiusOne (think GeoComons) has shared with us details of their Haiti dashboard – geospatial information resource. From GeoCommons… “we are working with CrisisCommons.org to collect data to support humanitarian relief efforts in Haiti. The dashboard below provides maps illustrating some potentially useful datasets. If you’d like to contribute data to the effort please visit GeoCommons and tag your datasets “haitiquake.”
look for FortiusOne on ABC 7 news tonight in the 5pm news hour with Natasha Barrett and on WUSA 9 at 6pm with Andrea McCarren as we work to encourage others to contribute to the cause. The Washington Business Journal featured our efforts here. The team also asks, If you know of additional relief organizations, please add them to the registry http://haiti-orgs.sahanafoundation.org/orgs/
