I have to thank Twitter colleague, Craig Williams (@williamscraigm) for some tips and insight on this one! Those of you who are baseball fans may be aware that the 2016 MLB All Star game was recently awarded to the San Diego Padres! WAY COOL you might think, but sit back and think of years past and ask yourself, isn’t the All Star game usually the same week as the Annual ESRIUC which is also in San Diego? Bingo!! Indeed it is.

Once again another International Esri user conference has come and gone. Myself, like about 15,000 others who made the trip to San Diego are now coming down from a big “Geo High” and are organizing our notes and contact information from all the great things we saw and fabulous people we met. The week began much like most other conference week’s did, with loads of excitement and Esri President Jack Dangermond addressing the huge crowd in attendance at the opening plenary. I felt that Dangermond really set the tone for the week with his opening remark that may have come over as rather surprising to many – he expressed how “something is changing, and we’re about to see GIS reach its full potential… there’s something afoot and I encourage you to notice it.” An exciting and bold statement I felt but after the week was done it did indeed seem rather appropriate and most of us at the conference did indeed go out there to notice it.

This really cool announcement came my way via the Esri Story Maps team… If people took last Thursday off for the long July 4th weekend they may have missed that along with the various updates to ArcGIS Online, we’ve released a completely new story map app that we think will be game changer especially for GIS professionals with a lot of narrative text, maps, images etc that they want to present.” Enter the Story Map Journal
We are assured that Story Maps will be represented pretty extensively at this year’s International User Conference. Attendees will hear about them and see live example story maps on the main stage (likely even from Jack himself I’m told), as well as in the various demo islands on the exhibition hall floor, demo theaters, technical workshops, and user presentations. The 2012 International Esri User Conference is approaching fast (July 23-27, 2012 in San Diego, CA.). There’s no question that browsing the conference agenda and planning a week of activities is a monumental task. With several concurrent events (EDUC, GIS Manager’s Open Summit and more), 15+ half/full day pre-conference seminars, and over 1,500 events listed in the online agenda one needs to carefully strategise and plan out the week to make sure you catch everything that’s crucial to you and to maximize your time in San Diego… and don’t forget about all the social activities, parties, and special meetups (like the unofficial Sunday Night TweetUp! (See http://bit.ly/2012esriuctweetup)
Like years past and like this year’s Esri DevSummit, I’m hoping that a handy mobile agenda will be made available soon for my iPad, this will definitely make things much easier… and I’m willing to be an Android version will also be available – stay tuned on that one or check out the Esri UC website or Twitter (@esriuc #esriuc) for updates on this! I sure hope the mobile app comes soon as I’d hate to have to print out the agenda and carry it with me!
Seems @cageyjames and I both agree that indeed it would be a good idea to simply have a mobile app for the Conference that updates each year, rather than creating a specific app for each year (eg. 2011esriuc app, 2012esriuc pp, etc…) then I could simply run an update each year.

There’s no question that there was loads of cool technology and interesting success stories on the floor of the ESRI UC once again this year. I’ve taken a first kick at the cat by listing off just a few of the wow technologies that I spotted on the floor this year.. check it out and if you think I missed something, feel free to comment on some WOW technology that you saw! Trying to rank “the best” Twitter posts… sorry, but I have to jump on this one as to me it seems simply crazy! I’m into contests and marketing etc… (heck, who doesn’t dig free stuff?) but the idea of trying to decide which tweet out of thousands is the best is a little crazy in my mind. I guess I’ll give APB some credit for trying to grab some attention from the popular #ESRIUC twitter stream but I’d have to say the efforts could be in vain… kudos on them for offering up some nice prizes to people who tweeted from the conference though!
I’m a steadfast believer that there really isn’t any right or wrong way to tweet (although there are acceptable practices evolving) and it often irks me when I hear or see people writing about how to properly tweet or how to do it right… come on, its a Tweet.. you have a140 characters to say what’s on your mind. If I happen to get a tweet from a conference organizer reminding me that a session is starting in 10 minutes and I forgot about it well, that’s a great tweet. If I’m walking the Gaslamp and get a tweet telling me about a great party at Dick’s with free beer and free grub, hell, that’s a great tweet; if I’m a mobile GIS geek and I hear about ArcPad 8 features that include real-time connect to the GeoDatabase, hell, that’s a great Tweet.
The publication (I’m sorry but I’m not permitted to actually say the name here) and their blog did indeed encourage people to tweet for cash, however, I’d have to say that they may have missed out on a few good Tweets for some prizes! Kudos to everyone on the #ESRIUC hashtag that had something interesting (and even not interesting) to say and no dis-respect meant to any of the contest winners at all (I actually follow them!) As for ranking tweets, realistically, I’d have to think the only way you could qualify a tweet would be to perhaps look at the amount of Re-Tweets, any other way of judging them will likely result in some TwitterFail backlash! Another lesson learned I guess.
I’ve had a number of people ask me if I have photos or videos of the “vine” or tree people that were entertaining us at the ESRI user conference party in San Diego. Jack always lines up some great entertainment and this year was no exceptions! Check out these very cool vine people as they wow the crowd!
