COGS, you’ve likely heard of it, or perhaps you know of it as the Center of Geographical Sciences. COGS has become well known in GIS EDU circles as a world-class institution. Students from all over the Globe attend COGS and most, if not all of them, find excellent careers in the GIS industry upon graducation.
So, what’s it like attending COGS? My friend and colleague, Michelle Brake (@mbrake1) recently graduated from COGS and immediately, upon graduation, relocated to Nashville, TN from Nova Scotia where she accepted a position as a JR. Solution Engineer. You might also be interested to know that Michelle initially connected with GEO Jobe when she attended the Esri DevSummit in Palm Springs. Obvioulsy, her eagerness to “get out there” and network with industry professionals paid off! A tip, I would encourage any young professional who is looking to network and open doors for employment to participate at events and conferences, volunteer, and present or pitch their recent work at DevMeetups, lightning talks, hackathons etc…
Michelle has recently shared details of her experience at COGS, along with a description of current programs and opportunities. For anyone looking to advance their career opportunities in the GIS industry, this is an excellent read.
From Michelle… “I can easily say that this program was one of the most challenging and rewarding things that I have done. The program prepared me to hit the ground running and tackle a variety of tasks in the GIS world.”
