I’m not sure if you Yahoo! or not (honestly I can’t recall the last time I hit the site) but apparently a few of you do and apparently Marissa Mayer has been doing some “great” stuff there also – beyond getting tons of recognition via social media I honestly am unsure what she’s done since taking over the helm but she has created some buzz there and apparently, according to stats Yahoo! traffic is swelling. Something she has done recently is she created a new logo with a design team (Actually they simply picked a new color it seems – actually, a color they used by in 1995) and she also created a video about the process (think more buzz)… oh, and she also penned a lengthy blog on the process as well… If you aren’t familiar with Yahoo! then I suggest you Google them ;0)
Archives for September 2013
The current year of BCIT GIS students started their classes the first week of September. Part of their course load is to locate a sponsor, who will undertake a project or practicum with them in the January – May 2014 timeframe. Would you consider having a BCIT student undertake a project or a practicum with you? The student(s) can help you with a project that you may not have time to develop, or can work on your daily mapping needs as you require. From the program… “Our goal is to have all our students signed up with a sponsor by the end of October at the latest.”
Yep, there’s a poll for just about anything you can imagine. Case in point, some results have revealed what are being called the happiest cities in America and the results are pretty surprising I’d say! Let’s just say that maybe you do want to mess with Texas and apparently, all work and no play in the tech scene make for some pretty unhappy folks! Don’t worry though, the findings did reveal that more than one third of America is happy so you have about a 33% chance of being greeted with a smile when you approach someone…
About the poll. Conducted by Harris explored the many factors which may play into Americans’ happiness, including age, gender and race/ethnicity and the findings also show that place matters and can greatly affect the happiness index.
And so, here’s the Top 10 Happy places according to the findings:
No huge surprise here as recent findings reveal what we likely already knew… STEM careers are booming and teens are losing interest in science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) and medical-related fields. Despite interest declining, the United States Department of Labor predicts employment opportunities in STEM careers will increase by 17 percent through 2018. The report presents the findings of a study conducted Feb. 5-15, 2013, using the KnowledgePanel to interview 1,025 teens ages 14-18 years old.

By now you’ve likely heard that Microsoft has bought Nokia. So what does this mean exactly? Simply put, Nokia has sold off its devices and services divisions – note, Nokia will retain the HERE brand and the navigation services and Microsoft will license HERE and other patents from Nokia.
Some of the other terms of the $7+ Billion dollar deal include:
- MS gets devices and services and will license patents
