Chasing Ice – largest glacier calving ever filmed

For the week-end, a little bit of awesomeness… the largest glacier calving event to ever be filmed while shooting for the film, Chasing Ice. Chasing Ice won the award for Excellence in Cinematography at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, and has won 24 awards so far this year. Playing in theaters now.



The History of NORAD Santa… Believe!

Over the years one of our favorite topics of discussion in December here at GISuser has been NORAD Santa… the fine efforts of the NORAD team implemented each year to track and secure Santa Claus during his long journey. It was back in 1955 out of the Continental Air Defence Command (CONAD) when Colonel Harry Shoup (The “Santa Colonel”) began communicating with Santa and radar sites in order to track Santa. A special phone line started receiving calls from children all over the country when Sears Roebuck accidentally made a mis-print in an ad about how to call Santa, routing the calls to Col. Shoup… the rest is history! Sadly, Colonel Shoup passed away on March 14, 2009 in Colorado Springs, however, there’s no doubt that NORAD and the Shoup family is expecting and will greatly appreciate the emails, phone calls, and Internet traffic to continue to increase every year as the NORAD team continues with the tradition. Environmaps uses ArcGIS tools to win honorable mention at AngelHack

Esri Canada has congratulated a Canadian developer, Environmaps, for winning an honorable mention at the recently held AngelHack competition. From Esri… The app leverages ArcGIS, Esri’s geographic information system (GIS) solution, integrated with open-source software and consumer-oriented maps. Through the app, property developers can easily search for a property by address, view data on land use and environmental features, as well as generate maps and PDF reports to support development permit applications. The 67 teams who competed at AngelHack Toronto were given 24 hours to develop a Web app representing their business startup idea. Tu, who works as a land-use planner, conceived the idea for Environmaps and co-developed it with four Web developer friends.  See more about the project HERE – Explore Environmaps at: environmaps.com.

The pressure to know something immediately is balderdash…

The title of this post is a quote from James, the author of what I found to be a very insightful article that provided loads of much needed common sense. My friend James from London (aka. @whatleydude) is a trusted friend from London who I had the pleasure of meeting several years ago at a Nokia hosted workshop.  He’s funny, articulate,knowledgeable, and full of it… and by “it” I mean advice and common sense!

He’s reminded us lately of the need to be social, to get back to the conversation, and forget about the rediculous need for immediacy. Seriously though, if you could have a gift of getting 20 minutes to spend with a long lost friend or relative would you really have your face stuffed into your smartphone screen? Thanks again for the reminder James…

The post reminds me of just some of the crazy things that we see or do every day, for example:

  • at a recent lunch meetup I noticed one attendee had tweeted more than 50 times during the hour… seriously?? I’m sure they really got loads out of the excellent speaker!
  • a recent bump into an acquaintance at Starbucks I attempted to start a quick conversation but the person was too concerned with doing a checkin on Path
  • or the familiar sight of 2 people having dinner and anxiously texting away to others while hardly exchanging a word with each other.
  • The “need” to tweet first, regardless of grammar, spelling, or even verifying what you link to
