Victoria Geographers Get Kudos For Innovative Land Registry System

Congrats to the crew at Victoria-based CloverPoint Cartographics, Victoria B.C Canada for the terrific recognition they’ve received recently from the local media, in particular, a full page article and images appearing in the Saturday Business section of the Times Colonist newspaper. The crew has been recognized for their Insights Land Registry system being used by B.C First Nations peoples to help maintain and manage their land base and land development.

Volvo Ocean Race Live streaming available July 2-3

Having lived most of my life in port cities and also, after experiencing first-hand an awesome party in New Zealand years ago when the yachts from the Whitbread Around the World race came into Auckland New Zealand I’ve been a small fan of racing. But now that I’m a tech geek I’m really interested in the technology used to deliver live updates, information, news feeds and the like via such events. This week the Volvo Ocean Race is under way and live updates are being streamed to the Internet.  Each of the six VOR 70 boats has traveled some 39,000 nautical miles, at speeds of up to 30 knots in winds exceeding 50 mph. Inmarsat’s FleetBroadband 500 (FB500), FB150 and Inmarsat C services have performed with 100% reliability in the most extreme conditions.

10 Ways Teens Are Fooling Their Parents using technology

No huge surprises here and always fun are these Top10 lists and here’s one just published that shares how teens are using technology to fool parents about their activity (no doubt this could easily be ported and used by a number of users and various scenarios – spouses, workplace behavior etc….) enjoy!  Despite their awareness of online dangers, teens continue to take risks by posting personal information and risky photos online – top 10 ways teens are fooling their parents include:

  1. Clearing the browser history (53%)
  2. Close/minimize browser when parent walked in (46%)
  3. Hide or delete IMs or videos (34%)
  4. Lie or omit details about online activities (23%)
  5. Use a computer your parents don’t check (23%)
  6. Use an internet-enabled mobile device (21%)
  7. Use privacy settings to make certain content viewable only by friends (20%)
  8. Use private browsing modes (20%)
  9. Create private email address unknown to parents (15%)
  10. Create duplicate/fake social network profiles (9%)

Interesting conclusions include: On average, teens spend about five hours a day online; Teens are glued to their news feeds; Facebook was the most popular site with 89.5% of teens using it, followed by Twitter (48.7%)

Sanborn Captures Imagery of Area Devastated by Waldo Canyon Fire

An interesting update from Sanborn Map Company in Colorado Springs. The Waldo Canyon fire has impacted a number of individuals in Colorado Springs. Employees of Sanborn, an industry leader in mapping, have also been affected by the events that unfolded the week of June 24th 2012. As a member of the community, Sanborn staff felt called to action. Sanborn employees have responded with a service to the community to capture and process high quality mapping imagery over the burned areas. The imagery was acquired by Sanborn aircraft flying at 16,000 feet on June 28, 2012 over the Waldo Canyon fire. Employees have worked to implement the map data in a web viewer and as a web service that can be ingested into GIS desktop software to allow use of the data in any way needed to respond and recover from this epic event.
