What weighs in at over 150kg, is valued at more than $100,000 and has broken a 350 year old Guiness World Record? If you guess a massive Atlas then you’d be correct! Yes indeed, Earth: Platinum Edition Atlas created by 90 dedicated cartographers over a four year period with the help of Esri Technology now holds the record as the World’s largest Atlas. The book’s largest feature is a collection of more than 30 photographs spanning the world’s most unique vistas. Only 31 copies of the atlas exist due to the difficult publishing process which involves printing the pages in Italy before they are sent to Hong Kong to be bound.

This info comes from Gene Roe of LiDARnews – In case you might not have been at SPAR, or attended the recent webinar, kubit is providing you with another opportunity to learn about their PointSense Plant product that runs inside AutoCAD. This one is scheduled for May 22 from 10 – 11 AM Central Time. Here is the link to register.
I did attend the recent kubit webinar with the Autodesk Plant Team. Their pattern recognition functionality looked very impressive making the extraction of pipe geometry from the point cloud look like a very productive workflow. They also have support for structural steel extraction.
With the cost of 3D modeling being such an important issue, automating this process is of high value. For more info and registration See HERE
