I’m a subscriber to an email discussion group for organizers of Global Ignite events. A recent post from Australia got my attention. Given that Global Ignite events serve to promote and bring together local communities, it seems appropriate that Ignite can also help spread the word about the devastation in Queensland, Australia. From Ignite Brisbane organizer, Gareth Edwards… Ignite Brisbane will more than likely not make GIW this year due to the worst floods in living memory throughout Queensland and Brisbane. Throughout Queensland there are 15 confirmed dead, there are Grave Fears for 12, and 61 people still missing. In Brisbane 11,900 homes are inundated, 14,799 partially flooded. 5000 businesses flooded or affected by the floods. Here is an amazing statistic, the aftermath from Hurricane Katrina = 223,000m2 Aftermath from Qld Floods = 1,000,000m2
If you can help by raising people spirits or by donating to the flood appeal, it would be most appreciated. A long road to recovery to come, and floods have not finished or receded yet. The Ignite Brisbane team and venue have also been directly affected by the floods, some with water inundating their homes or businesses, others not able to go to work, or purchase food from the empty supermarkets.
