Flixwagon – Live mobile video streaming, send to twitter, youtube, Ovi

Today I heard about a great mobile app called flixwagon. Like Qik (qik.com) the app enables instant, mobile video streaming to the web. Take that a couple of steps further though… once you’re registered you can setup your social bookmarks so that when you stream you also notify your twitter feed, upload the video to Ovi share, and blast to your YouTube account… flipping awesome!!

Graduate Student Assistantships McGill

The Department of Geography at McGill has announced graduate recruitment for entry in September 2009. Student assistantships are available for positions advertised on the department website, and funding beyond these are available from numerous sources including federal and provincial fellowships, teaching, and research assistantships. Applicants are asked to contact an appropriate faculty member to determine if she or he may be willing to serve as a supervisor. McGill is one of the top ranked universities in the world, and the department is an active research community with particular strengths in Earth System Science; Development; Environmental Management; GIS/Remote Sensing; Land Surface Process Studies; and Political, Urban, Economic, and Health Geography. Perhaps a little elementary but also useful to those not familiar with switching their S60 mobile device. This little video shows you the Switch application that comes with s60 3 devices, enabling users to change phones quickly and without hassle.



Sanoodi, location-based social networking and much more

Got mobile GPS? Here’s another great app to consider! I’m just checking out Sanoodi, another social networking app for outdoor enthusiasts – rather similar to Nokia Sports Tracker but offers much more. Essentially it enables users to share their routes (walk, jog, ride etc…) store them in their profile, share them etc… What’s really cool though is the SMap app – free route recording and sharing applications for GPS equipped mobiles. The app supports Symbian S60 (think Nokia N95), iPhone, Blackberry, and  Win Mobile. Users can store their routes and even export their tracks as KML or GPX files… nice! The updated Free Alaksa GIS Data resource

Ah yes, free GIS data… you know how much I love it and you likely know how I hate seeing people get ripped off buying it from data repositories (aka, data whores…) To continue my free data love today’s State spotlight gets turned onto Alaska. Check out this piece for a newly updated piece on State resources for free Alaska GIS data. I’m updating the list and going through state by state so in a couple of months the BIG, FREE data resource will be complete… think of it as a whackin pantload of data for the taking!

Just got my new “dothegreenthing” poster to remind me to keep acting green and being responsible. Over at the website the group has made the poster available for PDF download in several sizes so now you can have a nice big A2, A3, or A4 size poster on the office wall to remind people to be green!

Economic Stimulus Package from Autodesk for Attendees of AU

Autodesk is offering up 2 4 1 Reg for AU – Well, for the first 100 to register anyway! Be one of the first 100 people to register for AU 2008 on November 5, beginning at 9:00 a.m. (PT), and you can enable a “buddy” to register for free. The contest is being promoted as a Economic Stimulus Package.

Also at AU, Autodesk is also offering an un-conference space! Here the content is created and driven by participants. AU provides the venue and you provide the topics. AU Unplugged will help move some of the great hallway conversation that folks at AU have into a low-key classroom setting so attendees with similar interests can join in.
