Medical geography – AIDsVU visualizing HIV by Zip / Census Tract

Like many good geographers, I’m a huge fan of medical geography and the practice of analyzing spatial patterns and trends in order to better understand the makeup and geography associated with health issues. An interesting project announced this week comes just in time for national HIV testing day and provides a look at the spread of HIV. the AidsVu app provides a look at the spread of HIV within 13 major urban areas of the US broken down by ZIP code and Census tracts. The app also mashes up the data with a number of social variables like income, access to health care, education etc… See www.aidsvu.org or see also more details on the project in this announcement
