Dr. Harold Foster (Medical Geographer) Passes Away – August 15, 2009

I just returned from an evening work-out at the gym to a few emails awaiting my attention, unfortunately, one of the messages was from the CAGlist and sadly informed me that Dr. Harold Foster has passed away. Dr. Foster was one of my favorite Profs from the University of Victoria (BC, Canada) during my years there (1990-1993)  providing some fantastic and informative lectures in medical geography and the Geography of Japan (Foster entrenched in myself and many other students, the importance of selenium).

Dr. Foster has served as a consultant to numerous organizations, including the United Nations, NATO and the governments of Canada, Ontario, and British Columbia. He is a member of The New York Academy of Sciences, The Royal Geographical Society and The Royal Society of Literature. He was also a member of the Science Advisory Panel for the Healthy Water Association, and a member of the boards of the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine and the Canadian Schizophrenia Foundation.

Dr Foster was born in Tunstall, Yorkshire, England where he was educated at the Hull Grammar School and University College London. While at university, he specialized in Geology and Geography, earning a B.Sc. in 1964 and a Ph.D. in 1968. He was a faculty member in the Department of Geography, University of Victoria, from 1967 to 2008.

Oh no... that's so sad. I ran into him at the White Heather Tearoom a few months ago and, while I hadn't ever truly "met" him, I had enjoyed his visits on C-FAX radio and attended his lecture last spring in Sidney at the Health Expo. I was looking for his website the other day and couldn't figure out why it wasn't up. I wonder what will happen to his amazing books. I wanted to show his research to a client of mine who has MS. Do you happen to know how we might still access his .pdf books? Might the Geography Dept at UVic keep them available to those of us who refer them to others frequently. I, too, take selenium, upped my D significantly and have told the AIDS story Harold used to tell on C-FAX to many and sundry over the years since first I heard it. I'm sure he will be greatly missed.

I am glad he had touched your life and the lives of others. He was an inpiration and wonderful step father to my brother and I. We will all miss him very much and of course, not too sure if he said this when you were his student, "don't forget to take your selenium"

very sad. I had been following his work on selenium and hiv for years. He will be greatly missed.
