Using GIS to find the Truth About Crime in the UK

An interesting story comes my wya via the BBC UK… Mentorn Media (www.mentorn.tv) and digital design company Cimex (www.cimex.com) have recently completed a TV and Web project exploring the reality of crime in the UK by conducting a unique experiment – dubbed the ‘crime audit’.

They’ve taken one typical city – Oxford – and attempted to get an unprecedentedly detailed picture of the crime taking place on its streets (and in its homes) over one fortnight. To produce the ‘audit’ they combined:
Round the clock filming on the ground for two weeks with Police, the Fire Service, A&E doctors & nurses.
Detailed analysis of official crime statistics.
Comparative analysis of data from emergency services, hospitals, trading standards and more.
Extensive interviews with perpetrators, victims, residents and local teenagers
carried out a detailed online questionnaire and a young adults survey to try and find out details of the crime that goes unreported.

The website provides an opportunity to explore the findings of the audit in more depth and also gives access to the data behind our unique experiment through our specially commissioned interactive crime map – produced by Mentorn Media and digital design company Cimex.
