TomTom GPS Users Reveal Which US Cities Are Most Congested
Some interesting research findings from Tom Tom & Tele Atlas… Speed Profiles aggregates the actual speeds that millions of anonymous, GPS-enabled drivers have traveled over the last two years. From the report… The results of the continental U.S. states reveal some interesting surprises:
* Seattle, Washington is the city with the worst traffic in the United States, with an average of 43% of its roads showing heavy delays. Rounding out the top five cities after Seattle are Los Angeles (38%), Chicago (37%), San Francisco (35%) and New York (31%).
* The “Bay Area” of California has the most cities in the top 30, with San Francisco, San Jose (29%) and Oakland (28%).
* The most congested “corridor” is between Baltimore and Washington, D.C. About 36% of that area’s roads, largely in Montgomery County, are congested.
* While New York has many pockets of heavy congestion, the area also contains many major arteries for alternative routes. In fact, cities with fewer options for alternative roads were higher on the list.
* The least congested of the top 30? Minneapolis, Minnesota. Only 17% of the roads in that city are congested.
The top 25 congested areas in the US:
Rank CITY/REGION % of congested roadways
1 Seattle, WA 43%
2 Los Angeles, CA 38%
3 Chicago, IL 37%
4 Montgomery County, MD 37%

Waze (@waze) Crowd Sourced Navigation Encourages Users to Get Munching over the Holidays and Win!
Ok, this one is bloody brilliant!! You likely know by now that I’m a huge fan of all things Geo, mobile, local, social, and geeky, so there’s no wonder that I’m a fan of Waze and am an avid “wazer” - of, I love free stuff and Shwag too ;0) The gang at Waze has just rolled out an update of their fabulous, free mobile navigation, crowd-sourcing data service for iPhone users - grab the update from the iTunes store if you haven’t already done so.
Loads of new functionality in this release, most notably the addition of road munching, a teaser, so to speak, where the crowd-sourcing data collection community (that’s you - the user) is enticed to much in certain areas that are in need of some crowd-sourcing and updating, and collect valuable goodies (look for the cherries, presents and other interesting, fun icons). When users grab or munch a prize they get additional road munching points, enabling them to rise in the ranks as a power wazer.
To kick things off with the new munching feature, Waze is offering up the top munchers some cool prizes over the ThanksGiving holiday season so get munching! See more at Waze.com or on Twitter @waze - more details available in this official PR release and the video provided below (no video appearing for you? See HERE) - you can find me on Waze as user GISuser!

New iPhone Application from Trimble
It’s great to see developers jumping on board and developing more Geo Tech apps for the iPhone platform - if you can’t see the opportunity here ($$$) then you maybe need to clean off your glasses! Trimble’s new AllSport GPS Turns any iPhone 3G into a Pocket-sized Personal Trainer - a perfect marriage really and this app reminds me lots of the amazing Nokia Sports Tracker application (an app that Nokia has mysteriously yet to leverage into a full-blown business) After downloading AllSport GPS, iPhone 3G users can:
* Begin a new fitness routine or maintain their existing workout plan
* Track exercise activity by monitoring time, speed, calories burned, and distance traveled during outdoor workouts
* Download map images and recommended routes to their iPhone
* Download high-quality content from Bicycling and Backpacker magazines
* View performance statistics and real-time information
* Store favorite outdoor workout routes
* Share fitness progress with friends and family
