I travel to the US regularly, monthly or more, however, staying connected can be a hassle, not to mention costly. Typically, when travel comes up for business, I will either purchase a mobile data plan from my carrier (Virgin Canada) and simply roam using data and message using apps (messenger, whats app etc…), however, doing this means I can’t use my regular number for calling or texting.
The other option I have is to purchase daily roaming from the carrier – otherwise known as a giant rip-off! I used to pay $5 a day for this which was fine, although the reset at midnight rather than a 24 hour meter is a real buzzkill I find. Fast forward to recently and my carrier has hiked up the daily rate to $7 or $8 depending on usage – ummm, ya, forget you Virgin Mobile!
So, what to do? Well, the solution is quite easy and T-mobile has you covered (you can hit up AT&T also but their plan isn’t quite as good). You’ll need to locate and visit a T-mobile shop once you land in the good old USA. From there simply ask them to set you up with a Tourist Plan. For about $30 you’ll be good to go for 3 weeks (21 days) – don’t let them sharge you extra for the SIM or activiation as its included! If you plan on being longer than 21 days, simply get a pay as you go plan and then you can keep the SIM and the same mobile number for every time you land in America – just be sure to top up your plan via your online account and don’t let it lapse with non usage because after about 3 months of no renewal you’ll loose your number.
