I have to thank Twitter colleague, Craig Williams (@williamscraigm) for some tips and insight on this one! Those of you who are baseball fans may be aware that the 2016 MLB All Star game was recently awarded to the San Diego Padres! WAY COOL you might think, but sit back and think of years past and ask yourself, isn’t the All Star game usually the same week as the Annual ESRIUC which is also in San Diego? Bingo!! Indeed it is.
A little investigation turned up the following tidbits:
- The 2016 MLB All Star game is set to take place at Petco Park, San Diego – see Yahoo! sports
- The 2016 International ESRIUC is scheduled (tentatively) for July 11-15, 2016 – See ESRI
- This from the Bleacher Report… “The game, which is scheduled for July 12, 2016, will mark the second consecutive All-Star Game in a National League park. Great American Ball Park, the home of the Cincinnati Reds, is set to welcome the league’s best players this year.”
Ok, so now you do the math! The ESRIUC and the MLB All Star game are set to take place the SAME week in San Diego according to my calculations. So what does that mean for hotel room availability, hotel prices and much more? OUCH
Well, apparently this isn’t a done deal yet! According to UT San Diego the following… “A key hurdle overcome recently by officials trying to bring the 2016 All-Star Game to San Diego was avoiding schedule conflicts with Comic-Con and several other annual summer conventions.” The article goes on to state, “ESRI officials agreed to tentatively re-schedule their event, which a report from the San Diego Convention Center Corporation says typically accounts for 40,000 hotel room stays and about $60 million in economic impact, to a different part of July than usual in 2016.”
Emphasis on the word “tentatively” it seems…
Now, none of this is “official” yet and I’m waiting on confirmation from the Esri UC conference planning team… stay tuned! Please be sure to verify dates before you make travel plans…
Personally, I think MLB should reschedule the All Star Game… Esri was there first! ;0)
In 2016 the GeoGeeks might have an All Star game to attend while at ESRIUC!
