LOL, I love this one… it seems NATO Canada via Twitter was trying to set Mr. Putin and all of Russia straight by giving them a bit of a geography lesson! Using Twitter as the platform of war (make Tweets not War right!) a map was shared that clearly revealed what was Russia and What was NOT Russia – take note Mr. Putin!

You may have noticed the topic of UAVs and UAS technology making loads of news lately. If UAS technology interests you then take note of an interesting event from ASPRS coming up this fall in Reno, Nevada – The UAS Symposium. The ASPRS UAS Symposium is a combination of Talks, Panels, Vendors, Poster Sessions and Live Demonstrations geared toward the GIS professional. There is no need to explain to you how UAV’s/UAS’s/Drones will alter the future landscape of Geospatial data gathering and modeling! Great stuff… honestly, I’d love to hit this timely event, what about you?

A topic that is hugely hot these days, particularly with the GeoTech crowd, is Open Data. I spent an evening in the meeting chambers at our local City Hall discussing OpenData with about 2 dozen other geeks with nothing better to do on a Monday night. The event was planned by and run by opendata enthusiast and co-founder of CitizenBridge, Richard Pietro and brought together about 10 very knowledgeable speakers and enthusiasts to share their stories and advice. The tour, which is supported by sponsorship from the Microsoft backed Open Source project, Make Web not War, is designed to ignite the open government conversation in areas that may not have had the chance to experience the conversation – that may not be the case in Victoria BC but it is always a great idea to re-ignite the discussion.

Ah yes, to drone or not to drone… Selecting one’s first drone errr UAV errr UAS can be a little daunting. Do you purchase from a local dealer who can guide and advise you and also hook you up with spare parts after an unexpected crash landing, or do you shop online and roll the dice? I’m scoping out a few options for a personal airborne sensor and wondering which route some of you folks are electing to go… [Read more…] about Drone Mapping and Selecting Your First UAS … err … UAV… err… drone… err

With the start of the 2014 Friends Life Tour of Britain just weeks away, cyclists and fans can get their hands on this year’s stage maps as Ordnance Survey and SweetSpot release the routes. The new route maps are available in a range of formats and can be viewed, downloaded or exported as GPX files for mobile devices, allowing cyclists to try out the routes or spectators to pick the best spot to watch.

It would be interesting to hand a smartphone to Alexander Graham Bell. I don’t think he could fathom that his invention would translate to what it is now. In what started as a line and a can has evolved to include video communication, cloud computing and sending images and messages to your dearest ones instantaneously. Even more mind-blowing is how quickly the technology has evolved over the past 20 years.
The Dawning of the Mobile Device…Hand-held transmitters were first used by the military during the Second World War. Military officials would bark orders on bulky hand-held devices to their members in the field. In 1946, mobile telephone service was introduced to about 5,000 people in St. Louis with a mobile device weighing a whopping 75 pounds. Imagine lugging that around!

Trust Esri to not miss an opportunity to churn out another cool Map Journal or story map (ya, I’m still a little confused in what the diff is between a journal or story map etc…). This latest Journal shares some really cool images, maps, stories, and facts about sharks, all in the very pleasant to use Map Journal layout. The features reveals interesting shark facts and shares stories of how gentle this giant can be as well as facts describing the threats (like overfishing) . Some fine maps showing protected areas are shared. Nice stuff – see the Shark MapJournal HERE
