Don’t want your mashup to look like a Google Map, consider Drupal Nice Map

Thinking of developing a nice map mashup or simple webmap… consider Drupal! I recently stumbled onto details of the Drupal NiceMap module which essentially acts as a WMS client that integrates with Views. In this blog post the developer explains that while Google maps are popular and simple to use (relatively) its not always the perfect solution, particularly if you don’t want your maps to look like a Google maps site.. .enter Nice Maps. Check out this blog and see also this fine example of a Drupal map service they developed for showing off DC night life hot spots mashup up with crime data so users could head out at night safely.. very slick! Dude, this rocks. I'm new to Drupal (despite over a decade of programming and HTML/CSS) and thought Google Maps mashups were cool. Step aside, mashups…

Great timing! I was just scouring for google map “skins” (turns ou, no such thing) but this is one step better. I absolutely agree that differntiating yourself is going to be important as mashups continue to grow as a business.

You also might be interested in a website I just finsihed that allows you to create a customisable google map with flickr photoset information laid over it. The maps use the standard google maps layout though – not the Drupal Nicemap module.

However it is another way to embedd google maps in your website without any coding knowledge. The website URL is http://imapflickr.com/
