The following are details of a training event in Canada that may be of interest to some. The National Summer Institute for the Statistical and GIS Analysis of Health Data (NSI) an intensive, hands-on workshop that enables participants to advance their understanding of health data through the exploration of key statistical and health mapping applications. The NSI runs from June 21-27, 2009 and is open to approximately 50 participants from across the country, including academics, researchers, graduate students, and practitioners in the field (such as nurses and health analysts). Participants should have some background preparation in statistics, such as a university course, however no background in GIS (mapping data) is required. The NSI is presented by members of the Departments of Geography, Psychology, and Sociology at the University of Regina.The cost for the NSI is a non-refundable reservation fee of $150 (GST included), $75 for students. StreetMapper hits the USA in Denver at SPAR
StreetMapper is the result of a joint venture between 3D Laser Mapping, German guidance and navigation specialist IGI mbH and technology company Riegl. The system employs the latest laser scanning technology for improved field performance and accuracy, precision navigation including a solution for reduced GPS coverage in urban areas, combined with a flexible, modular configuration and increased ease of use and deployment. People’s Map Rolled out in the UK
News from the Getmapping crew in the UK inform us about People’s Map and the New Website – Getmapping aerial photography is playing a vital supporting role in the People’s Map – www.peoplesmap.com. This is an ongoing web-based mapping project, which allows users to create their own mapping by drawing over Getmapping aerial photography. Users simply register and map everything from roads and land use through to points of interest, using the simple online editing tools. Anyone can register, contribute and use the map for private, non-commercial use for free apart from a small delivery charge – it is entirely free of charge. Virtual Earth Imagery updates for March 2009
From the VE Blog… Another huge addition to the digitization of our planet just hit the web last night – 21TB – all ortho imagery launched into Microsoft Virtual Earth, powering Live Search Maps (and other Live Search properties). This latest update includes some 21 terabytes of new straight aerial imagery in Brazil, Canada, China, France, India, Mexico, Russia, Turkey, the United States and many more. See details here
Geospatial Intel for Emergency Management Class from Texas A&M
A new Geospatial Intelligence for Emergency Management class is being offered by Texas A&M University’s National Spill Control School. From the program… “This new two day class focuses on the use of emerging geospatial technologies for the Emergency Operations Center. Topics include Integrating Realtime Weather for GIS, Specialized Weather Applications, HAZMAT Plume Modeling with ALOHA, GPS Photo Mapping for Damage Assessment and how to put together a “GIS Go Kit”.
