Creating Maps and the Network Effect - a great read!
Let me share with you this excellent article I ran into that covers off some recent history of web mapping and looks at the effect that community input, mobile devices, user-generated content etc… are having on the creation of maps and webmaps. The author, Sean Gorman (think FortiusOne and GeoCommons) does a nice job of discussing how mobile devices have introduced active and passive data from users and how indeed there exists a potential to explode with the emergence of mapping and GPS technology on mobile phones (think loopt, brightkyte, whrrl etc…) Sean sums it all up nicely in the end by commenting… “We risk being deluged by so much data that we are not able to make sense of it all or use it in a meaningful way. At the same time there is real power in the mass of data that is being unleashed for public consumption.” See the article over at Vodafone

Beginning in 2005, this paradigm turned upside down.” Sean Gorman’s article is a great summary of all the happenings in user-generated maps, mashups, and related trends over the past few years. It all ties together, you see. Via AnyGeo. [...]
